Spills on MMTP

Darryl Taylor

Sometimes spills occur on the job site. Spills are supposed to be cleaned up right away. I want to share an example of a spill where the response time was slower than expected. This spill was caused by a drill falling into a soft are while it was moving from one area to the next. The operator was safe but the environment was affected by somewhere between 80 and 100 litres of fuel. This occurred on private land. The landowner was informed and he was not happy.

Below are some photos Travis, Keith

and I took of the spill over time.

Travis also has shared some words on this spill which is located at tower 265.

Miller's Environmental Corporation is on site removing ice from contamination site to waste facility.

The diesel fuel odor also the diesel sheen still remains on water surface.

We had scooped out the remaining ice chunks from the contamination site and swept the Site with Spill pads and socks, the pads seem to be working effectively in soaking up the remaining diesel fuel sheen

The diesel fuel seems to be contained in the main area of crash site and a majority of the diesel fuel was caught with the absorbent pads that we had the diesel fuel sheen is still coming up from under the ice when agitated.

Local landowner requested that a trout pond be also be tested for water quality.

The photo above is an excavator taking contaminated ice from site. It was hauled to a secured, area for remediation.

The photo above is a shot of a containment boom to stop the spill from spreading and contaminating other areas.

The photo above shows water samples being taken and cleaning the sheen off the top.

Thank you.
