Heritage Fieldwork

Darryl Taylor

Manitoba Hydro would like to send a huge thank you to representatives from Swan Lake First Nation, Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate, Peguis First Nation and the Manitoba Metis Federation for joining us and participating in the heritage fieldwork from May 27 – 30.

On May 28, representatives from Western Heritage, Manitoba Hydro and Swan Lake First Nation, Peguis First Nation and the Manitoba Metis Federation conducting fieldwork for MMTP on private land northeast of La Broquerie, discovered Late Historic (1870-1930 A.D.) materials including purple glass bottle fragment (pre-1917 A.D.); stoneware crockery, white and blue glazed ceramics, bottle glass, animal bone fragments and coal. The property where the artifacts were found is located adjacent to a small creek, which is a branch of the Seine River, and according to preliminary archival research it was historically called Hope Creek. The artifacts were laying on the surface of an agricultural field, likely exposed through the recent agricultural cultivation. Further investigation including subsurface shovel testing at the location of the find, did not reveal any other heritage resources in the vicinity.

The artifacts were collected and the site was registered as DjLc-5 (Hope Creek Site) with the Historic Resources Branch. Custody of the artifacts will be transferred to the Historic Resources Branch. The Heritage Permit numbers for this work are A03-19 (S1) and A04-19 (S2). The Project Archaeologist is currently working on the heritage permit report, data entry and artifact analysis. The site will be subject to additional monitoring during transmission tower footing installation.

There are two remaining sites that require pre-construction heritage monitoring.
